“It is curious how some of our best kitchens hardly look as if they have been designed at all -Perhaps that is a measure of good design ?” ponders Richard Edmondson founder and director of Emondson Interiors, formally known as “Bespoke Kitchens” until the decision was made in 2014 to move away from the word “Bespoke” as it had become an adjective that was being used to describe things that were not individually designed created and installed like Edmondson Interiors kitchens always are.
This traditional shaker kitchen was the summation of some pretty intense design. It is a stunning mix of timeless and modern, with country kitchen styling brought to a new extension on an eighteenth century home in East Sussex. Our client was exacting. Every detail was pored over. How could she have built in Gaggenau ovens of her choosing but avoid putting them into a tall oven housing which would move the design too far away from a farmhouse kitchen? Edmondson interiors experienced and talented designer Cris Sega worked out how.
Our client Angela Anderson quotes
“We were completely renovating our house and wanted to create a spacious family kitchen and dining area which would flow into the garden area, maximising our beautiful location whilst complimenting the house’s original architecture.
‘We knew we needed a classic bespoke kitchen but also wanted a freestanding/unfitted feel and the kitchen had to be practical for family life. Having found a kitchen maker that could deliver on quality, price and service, it was important to us that the Edmondson Interiors team were based locally and everything was designed and handcrafted in the workshop in Kent.”
The house is stunning. It is timber framed, jettied at the first floor sitting in really pretty rural surroundings. The kitchen opens onto a York stone patio designed interior designer Alexis Wylie. She has used some brick and shingle details to add some contrasting materials. This then runs into lawns and majestic oak trees and on into wilder areas.
So the kitchen needed to work well with the outside. The colours, the simple shaker style, the oak details, the limestone floor. Harmony comes to mind. The French doors for example, hardly noticed really. Finished in anthracite grey, slim details, opening as wide as possible.
On a sunny Easter morning. A lazy late breakfast in a private setting. Bliss. All that time spent getting it right really pays off.

Edmondson Interiors really enjoyed making this shaker kitchen. Only it is so much more than just a shaker kitchen. Every detail was meticulous planned to make for a clutter free kitchen, such as the the drawers. The front of the cabinets are flat paneled with a rebate moulding for a slightly more contemporary touch and we opted for more drawers than cupboards as felt these were more practical and space efficient. The Stanley Hammered Copper Pendant Lights above the island add warmth and tone beautifully with the wood in the kitchen. The house is stunning. “I hope this explains the process. I hope it is inspirational. I hope it shows what the word ‘bespoke’ really means.” says Richard Edmondson
Edmondson interiors will be closed over the Easter holidays so perhaps Richard will have a chance to whittle another spoon. If anyone else fancies getting creative with wood these holidays we rather like these cheerful Easter eggs made from wood off-cuts. The Edmondson Interiors team wish everyone a very happy Easter and time to indulge in your hobbies whatever they might be.
